If you are pregnant, your oral health may be the last thing on your mind. However, many Brookfield WI women experience an increase in general dentistry problems during pregnancy. This family dentistry article contains important information for expectant Brookfield WI mothers and those planning to become pregnant.

Brookfield WI dentist Dr. Ralph Pamenter recommends having a thorough dental cleaning early in your pregnancy. Lying in a dentist’s chair can be uncomfortable during the last trimester. A professional cleaning performed by one of the skilled dental hygienists at Brookfield Dental Care, along with diligent brushing and flossing, helps prevent gum problems that are often triggered by hormonal changes. The American Dental Association has found a positive correlation between periodontal disease and preterm deliveries and low birth weight.

If you are currently pregnant and have sore, swollen or bleeding gums, schedule an appointment today by calling (262) 649-9165. Once the baby is here, it will probably be harder for you to make time for a restorative dentistry visit.

If you receive dental treatment at Brookfield Dental Care during your pregnancy, be sure to inform Dr. Ralph Pamenter that you are expecting. This will affect decisions about X-rays, pain relievers, antibiotics, and sedation dentistry.

Hormonal changes cause an increase in plaque production which can lead to decay. If you are eating many small meals during the day, take care to brush after eating. If you avoid sweet snacks, your teeth will be less likely to develop cavities.

Remember, your oral care, nutrition and lifestyle affect your baby. It is essential that you eat a healthy diet with a variety of foods. A poor diet can harm your baby’s tooth and bone development. Be sure to get enough calcium, iron, vitamins A, D and C, protein, and phosphorus. Your Brookfield WI Ob/Gyn can give you specific recommendations for your age, height, weight and medical conditions.

At Brookfield Dental Care, we take special care of our clients who are expecting.

Specific dental problems can be addressed through restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

Each separate restorative and cosmetic dentistry procedure performed in Milwaukee can address a specific dental problem. For example, porcelain veneers can perfect the surface of teeth that are discolored or slightly misshapen. Dental bonding can fill a small chip in an otherwise healthy tooth.

Some Milwaukee dental problems are more extensive and require a combination of procedures. Crown restoration combined with soft tissue grafts can restore a severely decayed tooth with the root exposed. A bone graft and dental implant can restore a missing tooth in an area where the jaw bone has receded. Invisible braces followed by tooth bleaching totally transforms a smile by straightening and whitening.

What is the difference between tooth bleaching and tooth whitening? Tooth whitening is the term for procedures which remove surface stains to restore the degree of natural lightness. Bleaching goes even further by lightening teeth beyond their natural shade. That’s right: you don’t have to resign yourself to yellow teeth even if they have been that way your whole life! The natural shade of your teeth, by the way, like your skin and hair color, is determined by genetics.

Some smiles have been gleaming for years by regular whitening. You can maintain the whiteness of your teeth just as you maintain your fitness level. (Of course it is a lot easier to make a quick visit to your Milwaukee dentist once a year for whitening touch-ups than sweating in a gym several times a week!)

We live in an age where severe dental problems can be permanently corrected. You don’t have to participate in a TV makeover show in Hollywood to access these premium cosmetic dental procedures. They are available right here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dr. Ralph Pamenter has the same advanced training and extensive experience as the dentists who keep the smiles of famous actors and musicians camera-ready.

Schedule a consultation at Ralph Pamenter DDS by calling (262) 649-9166 to discover the perfect combination of procedures to achieve your ultimate smile.

Cindy Ruehs joined the team during the hectic holiday season. She is our newest dental assistant and adds a positive, cheery, and helpful attitude to the practice. She lives in Mukwonago with her family, which includes two daughters. She completed her training at PDAT in Hartland. In her spare time she enjoys reading, volleyball, and basketball.

In August 2009, Thea Hinz joined our practice as a dental hygienist and periodontal therapist. Thea brings 25+ years of dental experience to our practice! Prior to receiving her degree from MATC, she worked as a dental assistant/receptionist for 15 years. There is no job she can’t do! She is very thorough and enjoys working with patients of all ages, creating one-on-one relationships to better help them feel comfortable and relaxed. Away from the office, Thea enjoys spending time with her husband of 22 years and their adult son. You may also find her on the golf course, enjoying a motorcycle ride, or fulfilling her love of animals by caring for her 3 cats.

We are happy to have you both! Welcome aboard!

…between a “regular” hygiene visit, root planing, and periodontal maintenance? For a person that is used to seeing the dentist every 6 months, hearing they need root planing, may throw them for a loop.
A “regular” or standard hygiene visit is recommended for persons who do not exhibit any bone loss, infection, or periodontal disease. Plaque, tartar, and stain is removed from the tooth surfaces mostly above the gum line. Periodontal disease is a very common infection of the supporting structures of the teeth (bone, gums, roots) that, if left untreated, eventually leads to tooth loss. You may notice bleeding gums, loose teeth, bad breath, bad taste, or red and puffy gums. Or you may not notice any symptoms.

Root planing is the non-surgical first step in treating periodontal disease. This procedure removes tartar, bacteria, and their toxins from the root surfaces below the gum line where the gum and root meet. A re-evaluation is performed 4 weeks later. If the disease process is under control, a regular hygiene visit is no longer appropriate. Rather, special periodontal maintenance will be required to help keep your mouth healthy. Advanced disease may be more difficult to control. If this is the case, referral to a gum specialist called a periodontist is required. Further treatment, including surgery, may be needed. It can be confusing, so ask plenty of questions. Remember, we are here to help you feel comfortable with the decisions you make regarding your dental health.

Why do your teeth feel gunky?? We have replaced our tray delivery method for Fluoride! You may have noticed that you no longer have to sit for minutes on end, drooling with a bulky tray in your mouth. Following your hygiene visit, we are now brushing a thin layer of clear Fluoride varnish on your teeth. It may feel a little funny until you brush it off, but it is the extended contact and high concentration of Fluoride that is so efficacious. It is easier to apply, is twice as strong as the tray method, less is ingested, and…you can eat and drink right away! The Fluoride is incorprated into your tooth structure, making it more resistant to cavities. It can also help with sensitivity issues. So don’t worry…the “gunk” is not permanent and only you will notice it. Have a happy and safe holiday season.

Today is June 14th and summer has finally arrived. What a beautiful weekend here in Brookfield.

I have had some very interesting courses lately. I would like to briefly tell you about them. They both deal with implants in dentistry and in my practice. First a mini implant course that both Dr. Quandt and I took together. What I mean by that is the implants are smaller than the normal type of implant used for a single but these implants are meant to be placed in the lower front teeth area and support and retain a lower denture. It is fantastic how it holds the loser denture in place. Look for more information on this in the future but if you or any relatives or friends are having trouble with a lower denture staying in place call and we will set up an appointment to discuss them and show you what they are like.

Secondly, up until this point in time I have only restored regular implants replacing any tooth in the mouth. With continuing education I am now prepared to place implants myself her in my office. This will save a patient having to go to the surgeon to have the implant placed and then see me to make and place the crown that goes on the implant. Implants are fantastic and a great way to replace missing teeth. Ask me about them at you next visit.

Thank you.

Dr. Pamenter
